The carnival scenes at the beginning were filmed at Barry Island Pleasure Park, located right on Whitmore Bay of the Bristol Channel. The beach scenes were filmed right in front of the park along the bay. Pleasure Park opened in 1897 and is still open today, however Wikipedia states that it might be closing for good soon. The park has been used in other movies and TV shows filmed around Barry, including Submarine (2010) and the TV shows The Sarah Jane Adventures (2009) (the season 3 episode "The Mad Woman In The Attic"), Not Going Out (2006), and Gavin & Stacey (2007). The popular BBC TV series Being Human (2008) is set in Barry from seasons 3 onward (2011) and has filmed at Pleasure Park.

In Bloody New Year, as the teenagers flee the carnival, they are seen speeding past a Lifeguard Station on the beach, just down the shore from Pleasure Park. The same Lifeguard Station can be seen in the still above from Gavin & Stacey.

From here, the teenagers head out on a boat, which sinks. They wash ashore on an island, where they find the Mysterious Grand Island Hotel. Despite being on a remote island in the movie, this building is actually just a short walk from the Lifeguard Station and Pleasure Park. If you look at the stills with the Lifeguard Station, the house is located just on the other side of those trees in the background, hidden at the end of Paget Road. In 1858 it was built as the Marine Hotel, until it changed hands in 1873 and became the Pier Hotel. In 1894 it became a private residence and is now known as the Friar's Point Guest House. The house even has a ghost story, which is fitting given Bloody New Year.
