Lady In White (1988)

For my 100th blog post, I decided to tackle one of my childhood favorites.  It's the perfect film for the Halloween season.

Lady In White (1988) was filmed in many different places, including Raleigh Studios in Los Angeles and the cliffs of Kauai, Hawaii.  But it was primarily filmed in the small town of Lyons, New York.

Lyons served as most of the small town exteriors.  The Wayne County Courthouse was used as the courthouse in the film.  At the beginning of the film, as Frankie races through town on his bicycle, the Ohmann Theater is briefly shown.  This historic theater was built in 1915 but closed in the late 1980s, around the time the movie was made.  In 2005 the theater was renovated and re-opened, and is still open for business.  The scene where Frankie rides into the wet cement was filmed just down the road from the Ohmann.  Geno is seen jumping out of a neighboring alley.

The fictional Willowpoint Falls School where Frankie is locked in the cloakroom closet was at the time Midlakes Middle School in Phelps, New York.  It is located at the intersection of Main Street and Banta Street.  The distinct crescent cloakroom window appears to be a facade.  However, the former school is actually located next to a cemetery, so no movie magic was required to accomplish that feat.  The building is currently an independent senior living community known as Vienna Gardens.

The Scarlatti house is located in Lyons, a few miles north of the town area and the Courthouse.  The house and barn don't appear to have changed much.  The driveway sets the house pretty far back from the road, but you can catch a glimpse of it from County Road 245.

The mansion in the film is the Peter Augustus Jay House.  The property was the childhood home of John Jay, America's first Chief Justice of the Supreme Court.  In 1838, his son Pete Augustus Jay built the mansion atop the original home.  This National Historic Landmark is open for tours every Sunday from May To October.

The filming of Spookies was actually quite a troubled production.  The movie began filming in the summer of 1984 under the title Twisted Souls.  The film ran into troubles in post-production and wasn't finished.  In 1985, the financial backer of the film hired a different director to come in and finish the film.  The new director shot more footage, mostly the scenes with the young boy towards the beginning of the film.  This footage was edited together with the original footage to create the film Spookies.  The Peter Augustus Jay House was used for both the original Twisted Souls footage and the newer Spookies footage.

Girls Gone Dead (2012)

The recent straight-to-DVD slasher flick Girls Gone Dead (2012) was filmed in Florida.

The vacation house where the six girls stay is located in Jupiter, Florida.  The house was built in 2004, and is actually available for weekly rentals.  Even though the movie was filmed in southern Florida, the production was plagued by a cold front, which forced them to reschedule much of the movie.  Most of the outdoor scenes were delayed until the end of production.
